Energy snapshot

The contribution from renewable energy grows faster than that from any other source, in all World Energy Outlook scenarios, in large part due to the expansion of wind and solar PV in the power sector. Increasing deployment of variable renewables brings a continuing decline in their cost. But there is also the risk, if the power system is not well designed to integrate a rising share of wind and solar, that the energy transition could become less efficient and more expensive as a result. There is large untapped potential for renewable energy in heat production and transport, but policy attention and technology improvement in these areas have lagged behind.
